When a Cartoonist Landed in L.A. County Jail, She Drew What She Saw, Using Only a Golf Pencil [PDF] [Extended Online Version]

A longform, graphic novel-style story written and drawn by a cartoonist who spent two months in the L.A. County jail system on a misdemeanor charge. This story led the women's section of the L.A. County Jail system to implement improvements, including:

  • Inmates offered showers every 24 hours while in temporary housing
  • Monitors on the lights, to prevent guards from turning off the lights during the day for no reason
  • Inmates getting seven pairs of underwear a week, instead of four or five

I'm an editor in the Style section at The Washington Post, and I've written about arts, entertainment, business, and technology for the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Slate, Los Angeles Magazine, and other publications.
